Youth unemployment rate merely ‘empty talk’

KUALA LUMPUR, AUG 8: The Federal Government still fails to address youth employment issue including low-wage jobs.

Bukit Mertajam Member of Parliament, Steven Sim Chee Keong said, although the Human Resource Ministry announced that over 672,000 job opportunities have been created since 2013 but to date the youths in this country have yet to benefit from it.

According to him, almost 60% of the 468,000 unemployed Malaysians in 2015 were between 20-29 years old.

“The youth unemployment rate in our country has increased almost 4% since 2013.

“According to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Annual Report published in March 2017, the youth unemployment rate has reached 10.7% in 2015, which was three times higher than the national unemployment rate of 3.1%,” he said.

He said that however it is not a surprise as BNM had warned of the confidence and credibility crisis against Malaysia’s economy due to unresolved financial crisis.
