SHAH ALAM, AUG 7: Up to now, approximately 27,687 animals have been vaccinated against rabies in a massive operation in the Serian District, Sarawak.

In a statement issued by the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat, that number consists of 20,045 dogs vaccinated, 7,597 cats and 45 other animals vaccinated to prevent rabies from spreading.

“The dog vaccination programme is to control the spread of rabies or mad-dog disease in five villages in Serian, yesterday.

“The five villages are Kampung Terbat Leban, Kampung Terbat Mawang, Kampung Mayang Kawan, Kampung Sebintin and Kampung Engkeroh,” it said.

JPBN Sarawak had decided to create a buffer zone between Sarikei and Sri Aman to curb rabies or mad-dog disease from spreading into other areas in the state.

Since the Malaysian Health Ministry (KKM) announced about the rabies infection to human in Serian District early this month, five people in Sarawak have died due to that disease with the latest being a 52-year old man, last July 23.
