SHAH ALAM, JUNE 19: More than 60 types of food will be imposed with the Goods and Service Tax (GST), beginning July 1.

This is confirmed by Director-General of Customs, Datuk Subromaniam Tholasy, as quoted by The Star, and the full statement will be issues today.

“It is only several things that are seldom consumed by the public,” he said.

Earlier, the China Press reported that among those items are certain seafood, vegetables, fruits, teas, coffees, spices and noodles.

GST

The new items that will be subjected to GST are eels, swordfish and imported fruits such as avocadoes, figs, grapes, nectarines, cherries and berries.

Meanwhile, vegetables such as potatoes, beans, spinach and sweet corn will removed from the zero-GST list.

Other items include bihun, kuey teow, laksa, noodles and coconut oil.

The government started to introduce the GST in April 2015 in the form of a 6% tax on goods and services.
